Award of the IB Diploma

All assessment components and the additional requirements must be completed in order to qualify for the award of the IB Diploma. 

Asessment

Students sit final written exams in all of their subjects in April/May of their final year. These exams contribute between 70 and 80% of their final grade. The remaining 20-30% is comprised of internal assessment assignments in each subject.

How to achieve the award of the IB Diploma

The IB Diploma will be awarded to a candidate provided all the requirements have been met. All assessment components for each of the six subjects and the additional Diploma requirements must be completed in order to qualify for the award of the IB Diploma:  

  • CAS requirements have been met.
  • The candidate’s total points are 24 or more.
  • There is no “N” awarded for any subject, TOK or the extended essay.
  • There is no grade E awarded for TOK or the extended essay.
  • There is no grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.  
  • There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (HL or SL).  
  • There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (HL or SL).
  • There is a minimum of 12 points on three HL subjects.
  • There is a minimum of 9 points on three SL subjects or 5 points on two SL subjects.  
  • The candidate has not received a penalty for academic misconduct.  

A maximum of three examination sessions is allowed in which to satisfy the requirements for the award of the IB Diploma.  

Students will be qualified for Norwegian higher education even if they do not meet the diploma requirements as long as the following conditions are met:

  • A minimum of three in all subjects and 20 points in total.
  • Conditions for CAS are met and TOK and the Extended Essay have been passed.
